The Ground
Ola Gjeilo

The Ground is based on a chorale from the last movement of Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass for choir and string orchestra. Gjeilo wanted to convey a sense of having ‘arrived’ at the end of the Mass; to have reached a kind of peace and grounded strength, after the long journey of the Mass, having gone through so many different emotional landscapes.  The Chime Choir was fortunate to meet Ola in New York 2018 when we joined a performance of his ‘Dreamweaver’ suite at Carnegie Hall.
Tundra
Ola Gjeilo

Music Ola Gjeilo, Lyrics Charles A. Silvestri
Soloist Jessica Bakker

‘Tundra’, with its soaring soprano solo, captures the barren but beautiful landscape of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in Gjeilo’s native Norway:
Wide, worn and weathered, sacred expanse
Snowy patches strewn, anchored to the craggy earth,
Unmoving while clouds dance across the vast, eternal sky.
He Lives In You
From the musical THE LION KING

Music and Lyrics by Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin & Lebo M
Choral Arrangement by Mark Brymer
Piano Arrangement by former Chime conductor Marten Visser
Soloist Rachelle Mosca
‘He Lives In You’ is an emotionally charged song, used in various versions of the musical, in the 1998 Lion King II: Simba’s Pride movie, and the 2019 film.  The song is centred on the relationship between Simba and his deceased father Mufasa.  Mufasa’s legacy lives on within Simba, guiding him during his assumption of responsibility and his struggles.
Earth Song Frank Tichelli

‘A cry for peace in a world torn by war’, this a cappella setting of an original text contains striking dynamic contrasts and inspirational words, ‘but music and singing have been my refuge, and music and singing shall be my light’ - so very true for so many of us!

American composer Frank Ticheli is most noted for his Wind Band compositions, and we hope you will enjoy this choral piece, originally written in 2007, when we perform it at Festival of Song. The beautiful harmonies and strong writing have made this piece a standard for choirs around the world.
